Coming to a Close
Another show is coming to a close; plans are being made for a closing party, tearing down the set, giving gifts. As to that last... Now I know I'm somewhat of curmudgeon on this subject, but I wonder about gifting tech people, including the director, gifts after shows. To my knowledge this is strictly a little theater exercise. I wrote an email when the cast began speaking of this to state that, while I'm happy to participate, I believe that what the cast owes the crew is to put on a good show. That's the thing. Nothing is sweeter in the mind of a director than the memory of a good show; a gift doesn't enhance it. The converse is also true; when there is a stinker, no gift improves the lingering stench! So, Bah Humbug and all that.I don't think we got reviewed for this show which is a drag. It's good to get some objective feedback on the show and individual performances. I have absolutely no objectivity. As a necessity I believe any show I'm in at the time is great. Sometimes I change my mind in retrospect, but while I'm performing I believe in the show and the other actors. I like to get a reality check though from objective viewers. Most people who attend are not honest; they're home town fans, which is nice but doesn't provide useful info.
